Mugabe’s War
Alongside death and taxes , count Robert Mugabe’s election this Friday among life’s more depressing certainties. Behind Mugabe’s “victory” lies a grim reality. In recent weeks, the Zimbabwean dictator has savagely crushed internal opposition, making Friday's vote more a coronation than an election.

A Valentine for Vladimir
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad must be kicking himself. In the last year alone, the Iranian president has captured British sailors and humiliated their home country. He has lectured the United States about civility and human rights from a podium at Columbia University.

Exit Karl Rove
As President Bush’s closest political advisor and electoral strategist, Karl Rove was, depending on where you get your news, a masterful tactician or a sinister Svengali. Republicans hailed his political acumen -- not for nothing was he dubbed “the Architect” -- while the Daily Kos netroots literally howled for his head. News that Rove intends to resign his current post as deputy White House chief of staff at the end of the month and retire for now from the world of politics thus provides an occasion to reflect on the record that Rove leaves behind.

Death for a Dictator
Let us now praise the Iraqi legal system. Scorned by international watchdog organizations and self-credentialed legal minds since its establishment in 2003 as a newly independent institution, it has now done something that the international community’s premier courts have consistently failed to do: punished, in a reasonable timeframe, a mass murderer and delivered justice to his victims.

Justice Delayed
When the trial of Saddam Hussein began in mid-October, Iraqi leaders envisioned it as a powerful weapon against the country’s terrorist insurgency. Beyond attaining justice for the victims of Hussein’s 23-year reign of terror, the trial would establish the legitimacy of Iraq’s democratically elected government, secure the rule of law, and dishearten surviving Ba’athists by depriving them of any hope of Saddam’s restoration.
