Venezuela Govt Blames Colombia Paramilitaries for Violence, Contraband
On August 19, following an attack that left three military wounded and which the government attributed to paramilitaries, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro ordered the closing of the border with Colombia in the frontier state of Tachira for 72 hours. "Enough of this terrorism, of paramilitarism, of these attacks on the dignity of the people of Tachira!" said Maduro.

Controversy Continues over Venezuela’s New Security Operation
In July the Venezuelan government launched its newest anti-crime initiative: "Operation Liberation and Protection of the People" (hereafter referred to as OLP). The operations sends heavily-armed police and military forces to reclaim the state's monopoly of violence over poor areas supposedly under the control of armed non-state actors.
