Several media outlets recently carried a curious, eyebrow-raising story concerning a particular shawarma restaurant in Gaza. The owner of the eatery, which is located in the Jabaliya refugee camp, offered a whopping 80% discount to North Korean nationals as a sign solidarity with the Pyongyang regime which has taken a more confrontational stance against not only the United States since the beginning of the Trump presidency – likely to take advantage of Trump’s background as a businessman in attempt to negotiate a favorable security treaty – but against Israel as well, as seen in the exchange of strong words this past April.

The Geopolitical Impact of Tax Evasion and Offshoring: A Background
As explored in the first part of the series, post-9/11 attempts by the US federal government to regulate financial markets and tax havens contributed to triggering the 2008 Great Recession. Further, the reaction to the 2008 financial crisis contributed to even more assertive interventions of the US state, which have been altering the fundamental structure of the financial world ever since. Whether intended or not, this points to some deep link between geopolitics and global finance. This is ironic, since to some degree modern-day tax havens have a history of being birthed in a geopolitical context dominated by inter-state competition of the Great Powers.

The Geopolitical Impact of Tax Evasion and Offshoring: The Panama Papers
The recent revelations of the so–called Panama Papers – a massive 2.6 TB collection of data concerning the hidden shell companies of the world’s leaders and other famed personalities – have sent waves of astonishment through societies around the world. Since the release of the Panama Papers on April 3rd by the Munich-based daily Süddeutsche Zeitung, in conjunction with the Washington DC- based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), the fallout has continued to rattle various political regimes, as hurricanes of PR-aimed stunts, legal investigations, state-enacted Internet bans, and even the resignation of a prime minister have ensued. The fall-out of the event has been quite embarrassing and in many cases damaging for all parties involved.
