Opinion - America’s Chinese Headache in the Horn of Africa
The US military will be treated to various versions of that response in the months and years to come. Competing Chinese and American interests in the highly strategic confines of Djibouti are bound to spill over into provocations and accusations, and the laser incident is probably just a taste of the conflicts yet to come. American officials have become increasingly vocal over fears of Chinese influence in Djibouti and neighboring Ethiopia.

Historical Holocaust: Daesh’s Lasting Legacy
After months of bloody fighting, Kurdish peshmerga and Iraqi government forces – backed by pro-Iranian Shia militias – have driven Daesh out of Mosul and are advancing in the Euphrates valley. Across the border in Syria, Arab militias and Kurdish forces have liberated much of Daesh’s de facto capital of Raqqa, while regime troops and Russian airpower broke the group’s siege of Deir ez-Zor. The group’s final defeat in Iraq and Syria is a long-awaited turning point, but its few short years in ascendancy leaves a trail of destruction that will take decades to undo.

Arab League Summit: King Abdullah’s Delicate Balancing Act
King Abdullah of Jordan welcomes the 22 members of the Arab League to Amman on March 29th to discuss the most pressing issues facing the region. It would be an understatement to say he has his work cut out: while the Hashemite monarch has managed to shore up his position since the heady days of the Arab Spring, he is still struggling to weather the Middle East’s bloody power politics. Since many attendees are key players in the crises that are so deeply affecting Jordan, Abdullah has an opportunity to show off some of the same diplomatic prowess that made his father famous.
