Opinion - ISIS Defeats In Iraq And Syria Seen Leading To New Islamist Attacks In Former Soviet Space
The occupation of ISIS strongholds in Iraq and Syria in recent days does not end the threat that Islamist activists pose. Indeed, according to some observers, it may open a new phase in which ISIS supporters no longer having a territory to defend will instead turn to terrorist actions outside of the Middle East and in particular in the former Soviet space.

In spite of the violent precedent of such units in Chechnya, President Dmitry Medvedev has vindicated calls by some in the North Caucasus republic of Dagestan for the creation of anti-terrorist and anti-extremist units staffed by local people. That is an indication of just how poorly the existing policing structures are performing and how powerful the threat from the militants has become.

Russians identify Belarus as their closest friend and ally but say that the Baltic states, Ukraine, Georgia and the United States are the countries most hostile to their own, according to a new poll.
