Syria - Uprising vs. strategic value / West not keen on seeing Assad go
When leaders begin "broadcasting to the nation" quite frequently and address the public in overly intimate language, it's possible to smell the thick smoke coming out of the volcano.

Analysis / Syria walking a tightrope
If the Lebanese in Martyrs' Square in Beirut expected to hear anything new from Syria's Bashar Assad during his address on the relocation of Syrian troops to the Bekaa Valley, they were mistaken. With blatant disregard for the Lebanese protesters, Assad made it clear that his forces will remain on Lebanese soil.

An Israeli dispute on the Syrian question
With the exception of Syria, no country near Lebanon will be affected more than Israel by the historic process occurring in that country. Israel has almost no ability to influence the historic process in which the ideas of democracy are filtering into the Arab world.

Analysis / Syria is losing control
When Lebanese Prime Minister Omar Karame asked to resign last weekend, the Syrians made clear to their man in Beirut that his quitting would harm them just when Damascus was under mounting Lebanese and international pressure. Karame didn't hand in his resignation. Not then, in any case.

Analysis / A new political era for Egypt
Something "dangerous" is happening to public opinion in several Arab countries: It is beginning to chalk up more and more victories. Last week, the Lebanese public pushed Syria to announce its intention to withdraw from Lebanon.

Abu Mazen's `terror infrastructure'
Musa Arafat, commander of the general security forces in Gaza, was full of threats on Thursday. He made clear to the Hamas leadership that if it continued to undermine the cease-fire he would use his forces against them.
