Strip Searched by a Body-Scanning Machine
Historically, I'm a great traveler but a really terrible line-stander. I get restless and crane around at airports nosily trying to see what's taking so long.
Unbidden, I take personal interest in the stressed-out vacationers, business travelers, and occasional unaccompanied minors whose immediate needs conflict with the ever-changing, rule-based protocols of police and inspectors.

Calabrese Family Reunion
The biggest Mob trial in years, against five members of the "Chicago Outfit," began in late June. Seven of the original 14 defendants pled guilty and two died after the 2005 indictment, which alleges 18 mob murders spanning a "four-decade conspiracy." One of the key prosecution witnesses, Frank Calabrese Jr., has been giving devastating testimony against one of the remaining defendants, who happens to be his father, Frank Calabrese Sr. The son used to be a gangster, too (dad brought him into the business as a teenager), but more recently Junior ran a takeout deli in Phoenix.

Free Valerie Plame's Memoirs!
On May 31, Valerie Plame and Simon & Schuster filed a federal lawsuit against Michael Hayden, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and J. Michael McConnell, director of national intelligence, demanding that Plame be permitted to include the dates of her CIA service—Nov. 9, 1985, to Jan. 9, 2006—in her forthcoming memoir, Fair Game: How A Top CIA Agent Was Betrayed By Her Own Government.
