The Mysterious Ways of the United States and China
Returning from more than two weeks in China, I find I haven't missed much in Washington. A lot of budget-crisis commentary has flowed under the bridge since my previous post on that dismal subject, but I can't see much need to update it.

A risky trial that offers little reward
From now on, hesitate before you call the Obama administration timid. Its decision to try Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four other alleged 9/11 conspirators in a civilian court in New York City, rather than before a military commission in a far-off place, is brave. It is also unwise.

Why Democrats must choose Obama
The manager or the visionary. Hillary Clinton’s own supporters – the candidate herself, in speech after speech – have cast the fight this way. Stirred emotions and soaring rhetoric are all very well, goes the line. If that is what you want, vote for Barack Obama. But if you care about getting something done, choose experience, technical expertise and a safe pair of hands.

America in 2008: Populism calls the shots
The US is bracing itself for another year – can it really be another year? – of electioneering. The prospect would be impossible to endure were it not for the fact that so much seems at stake. Democrats are enraged by the Bush administration’s record and by the ability of a weakened president and the Republican minority in Congress to shut the legislative system down and block their every initiative.
