A political tremor brewing in Peru
A few weeks ago, we at The Americas Report wrote an article about the current situation in Peru, as a country finally laying the foundations for economic prosperity, this after years of struggle and internal conflicts against two major terrorist groups: Shining Path and the MRTA.

Peru today
It is hard to believe that just twenty years ago, Peru was going through one of its worst crises in its history. After years of irresponsible economic policies and public spending, the nation was isolated, plagued by a soaring hyperinflation, widespread terrorism, insurmountable debt, high unemployment, falling wages and a sense of hopelessness that made looking into the future extremely dim. Peru ended the 1980s with one of the worst recessions in Latin America, including an inflation rate of 7,000 percent, one of the highest in the world. Access to credit, foreign or local, was unattainable and the country was in desperate need of order and change. But thanks to tough measures taken in the 90's to correct the nation's course, Peru today is a totally different country.

The growing concern of Brazil & Iran
In recent months there has been a growing interest in the deepening relationship between Brazilian President Inacio Lula da Silva and Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Brazil has long been an American ally and analysts are questioning the motives behind Lula's eagerness in furthering ties with Iran; a long-time US enemy. Understandably, this new friendship has raised concerns among many foreign relations experts and the intelligence community.

Chavez's prisoners
Venezuela is suffering from one of the worst cases of oppression in its modern history. Under the leadership of Hugo Chavez, liberties have been stripped away from ordinary citizens that oppose the President or voice their discontent. The independent media is being relentlessly persecuted and journalists have been thrown in jail for voicing their opinions. Judges and even private business people are being harassed and the situation is getting worse by the day. In spite of this Chavez operates with total impunity.

Morales in Bolivia: 'If you are not with the Party, you are the opposition. There is no middle ground.'
Evo Morales won the Bolivian presidency in 2005 with an overwhelming 54% of the vote with his Movement toward Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo) gaining control of the lower house of congress. However, he failed to win the majority in Bolivia's Senate, and that body was able to stop some of his radical initiatives.

Who's behind the Obama Honduras policy?
The Obama Administration has made serious mistakes in its handling of the crisis in Honduras where it supports the return of the deposed president, Mel Zelaya. The Administration categorized the removal of Zelaya as a coup when, in fact, the Honduran military has had no role in governing the country.

What's wrong with Insulza and the OAS
By now, we are all aware of the situation in Honduras where President Manuel Zelaya tried unsuccessfully to use the nation's institutions to illegally convoke a referendum in order to change the constitution and perpetuate himself in power.

Zeroing in on Peru
Today, Peru is one of the strongest economies in Latin America. In 2007, the Peruvian economy grew 9% and continued at that rate through 2008, only slowing in 2009 due to the world economic crisis. However, it remains structurally strong with a gross domestic product that surged 9.84% in 2008; it's fastest pace since 1994. In addition to achieving economic growth, Peru has also successfully implemented market friendly policies, and increased property rights while recently ratifying a mutually beneficial Free Trade Agreement with the United States.
