Campaign 2012: The Candidates on Energy Policy
Amid ongoing economic struggles, the cost and availability of energy resources have become contentious issues in the United States. The issue has heated up on the campaign trail as voters contend with rising gasoline prices. President Barack Obama and Republican candidates say that increasing energy independence is critical to national security. However, they disagree on environmental and regulatory policy, as well as on which sectors should be favored.

Interviewer: Greg Bruno, Staff Writer, CFR.org: U.S. President Barack Obama has said the U.S. military campaign against Taliban forces in Afghanistan is aimed at preventing al-Qaeda from reestablishing a base that could be used to plot attacks against Americans. Prior to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, al-Qaeda enjoyed refuge under the Taliban government, and Taliban leader Mullah Omar refused to turn over Osama bin Laden to international authorities.

Report of the Monitoring Group on Somalia pursuant to Security Council resolution 1676, November 2006
This UN report states that in July, 2006 Somali Islamic militants supported Hezbollah's efforts in its war against Israel. In return, Lebanon reportedly provided weapons and training to the Somalis, with the help of Syria and Iran.

Interview- Drozdiak: EU Constitution Now 'A Dead Letter'
William Drozdiak, president of the American Council on Germany and former foreign editor and chief European correspondent for the Washington Post, says the rejection of the European constitution by French and Dutch voters probably means the document has become "a dead letter." He says the decision to hold a referendum in France was a major miscalculation by President Jacques Chirac that may end his political career.
