09/08/2009 | Malaysian Police Awaiting Feedback On Noordin From Indonesia

Bernama - Malaysian National News Agency

Police are waiting for feedback from the Indonesian authorities on the leader of the Jemaah Islamiah splinter group, Noordin Mat Top, who is believed to have been shot dead in Temanggung, Central Jawa Friday.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the Malaysian police would offer appropriate assistance to Indonesia if it was confirmed that the man who was shot was Noordin.

"I can't confirm on the incident. I have not received feedback from my counterpart in Indonesia.

"However, we keep in touch constantly and will help, including in identifying the man who was shot, whether he was the leader of the group or otherwise," he told reporters at the KL International Airport (KLIA) after attending a ceremony to send off the Royal Malaysia Police Band contingent who will be participating in the YSTAD International Military Tattoo in Sweden.

The Indonesian police reported that the most wanted terrorist in Indonesia was shot dead during a raid by the Indonesian anti-terrorist police using heavy artillery on his hideout in Central Jawa.

Meanwhile, Musa said he had also not received any information on the new leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE), Selvarasa Pathmanathan, who was detained in this country.

"Who has been spreading this news? Who are they...I myself have no information, so how is it that others know about it," he said.

The foreign media previously reported that the Tamil Tiger insurgents had acknowledged that their leader had been detained in Malaysia before being handed over to the Sri Lankan military.

On the International Military Tattoo, Musa said 12 bands from various countries were taking part in the world class show including from Great Britain, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Scotland.

He said the Royal Malaysia Police band was the only contingent from the Asian countries invited to participate in the International Military Tattoo beginning on Aug 11.
