Presidency of the Republic

Mexican President Felipe Calderón announced, in a press statement, a day of mourning for all Mexico because of the attack on a casino in Monterrey, Nuevo León, in which over 50 people died. He declared that this is an unpardonable crime that society should condemn and forcefully reject.

President Calderón sent his deepest condolences to all the victims’ relatives over this terrible and irreparable loss. He said that it is precisely because the country shares their grief and because the whole of Mexico expresses its solidarity with Nuevo León, that a three-day national period of mourning has been declared as from 25 August, the date when these atrocious acts were committed.

He added that the federal government will use all available legal, institutional and economic resources to identify those responsible for these events and make them pay for their crime.

To this end, the president instructed the Attorney General’s Office, in conjunction with the State Attorney General’s Office in Nuevo León, to investigate and bring those responsible for these events to trial. He also instructed them to offer a substantial financial reward to anyone offering reliable information that will lead to the capture of these killers.

President Calderón also reported that the presence of federal forces in the Monterrey metropolitan zone and the northeast of the country will be reinforced.

The president urged Congress, the judicial branch, and state and municipal governments to provide legal certainty for federal forces; review their structures and members; and speed up the fulfillment of the National Agreement on Security, Justice and Legality; and the rulings established by the Public Security Law, respectively.

President Calderón urged society, congress and the US government to reflect on the tragedy currently affecting Mexico and many Latin American countries, due largely to the insatiable drug consumption of millions of Americans.

He indicated that Mexico can no longer be the gateway or pay the consequences of this market, which not only translates into billions of illicit dollars from the black market but also thousands of deaths as a result of the violence caused by the gangs engaged in this business.

The president asked the US Congress and government to end the criminal sales of high-caliber weapons and assault rifles to criminals operating in Mexico.

He said that the federal government will persevere and redouble its efforts until it achieves peace and justice. We will continue, he said, with our responsible work to support Monterrey, Nuevo León and the whole country, to free Mexico from criminal barbarity, to dismantle the gang that caused this attack and any other criminal organization, of whatever nature, that is attempting to terrify and subject our people.

President Calderón declared that this is a moment of unity between all political forces, municipal, state and federal governments, congress, the judicial branch, civil organizations, communicators and all Mexicans, because Mexico is much stronger than a handful of criminals wishing to impose fear because of their ambition.

Lastly, he said that all Mexicans have a responsibility to the nation and that no-one can afford not to engage in this effort for Mexico, security, justice and legality. The Mexico we want.
