18/08/2012 | Racism in Quebec’s election

Gary Dale

All Canadians should be shocked at the racism shown by the various parties in the Quebec election. François Legault’s comments actually pale in comparison to the recent announcement by PQ leader Pauline Marois, that if her party wins, turbans, kippahs and hijabs will be banned from government offices — but crucifixes are OK.

While Legault’s statements may be defended as fair comment on different cultural values, Marois’s announcement is a blatant assault on freedom of religion. Yet obviously her announcement was intended to attract votes.

One could hope that Quebec voters would reject this outrageous pandering to racism if it were the first time this issue has come up. Unfortunately bashing minorities seems to be a perennial tactic in that province.

It’s a shame that the defense of cultural sovereignty so often crosses the line. As leader of a progressive party, Marois really should know better.
