24/04/2013 | Biggest Bogota marijuana seizure in 10 years: Police

Colombia Reports-Staff

Colombia’s National Police on Tuesday announced “the biggest confiscation of marijuana to occur in Colombia’s capital [of Bogota] in the last 10 years.”

The seizure was allegedly made in a series of raids carried out in the notorious ‘Bronx’ neighbourhood in the Colombian capital.

The police report claimed that the six tons of marijuana that were seized came from the southwestern department of Cauca. Authorities linked the haul to rebel group FARC, which allegedly controls a large proportion of marijuana production in the department.

Six arrests were also made in the raids, which were carried out in line with the police operation “Republica III”, targeting micro-trafficking structures within the city.

The police estimated the street value of the confiscated marijuana at over $1 Million.

In addition, police in Apartado, Antioquia announced the seizure of 220 pounds of cocaine, after intercepting a vehicle at a checkpoint in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The narcotics, which police found hidden in the walls of the vehicle, are believed to have come from the city of Cali, in Valle del Cauca department, and police believe the packages were headed for the northern municipality of Turbo, in the Antioquia department.

The drugs and the two men have been placed under the authority of the prosecutor general’s office.
