12/11/2013 | Uruguayan President Travels to Brazil and Venezuela

Prensa Latina - Staff

The situation of the Common Market of the South (Mercosur) and the presence of the presence of Uruguayan Blue Helmets in Haiti are topics that President Jose Mujica will bring for discussion to Brazil today and to Venezuela tomorrow.

The Uruguayan president is scheduled to meet in each nation with his Brazilian and Venezuelan counterparts, Dilma Rousseff and Nicolas Maduro, respectively, with whom he will discuss important bilateral topics.

Following his meeting with Rousseff in Brasilia, the 78-year-old president will return to Montevideo to then leave for Caracas on Monday to hold the meeting with his Venezuelan peer.

Official spokespeople said that the issue about an agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur will be a topic for discussion in the two meetings, as well as the most suitable date for the integration bloc summit, formed by Argentina, Brasil, Paraguay, Uruguay y Venezuela.

Uruguay seeks to move towards that agreement with Brazil, and as Venezuela holds Mercosu's pro tempore presidency, it will also be discussed the possibility of postponing the next presidents summit, scheduled for December in Caracas, to late next January or early February.

The current political situation in Haiti is also a matter of concern for Mujica's government, which is studying the possible withdrawal of the Uruguayan troops in the UN peace mission in that Caribbean country.
