15/10/2015 | Mexico - Oil leader shuns corruption

Jorge Chaparro

MEXICO CITY – The National Movement of Oil Workers for a New Mexico leader Miguel Arturo Flores Contreras announced that oil workers are ready to embrace changes brought about by the energy reform, which will open hydrocarbon exploration and exportation to the private sector.

After being sworn in as Doctor Honoris Causa by the Mexican Doctors Group in a ceremony at the Senate, the leader of the oil workers group said that the opening of the sector presents an opportunity for investors, workers and the general population of Mexico.

“We see a host of opportunities in this reform. The country needs to grow and that is especially true for the oil industry. The new generation of oil companies must play a fundamental role in all of these important changes,” said Flores.

However, Flores warned that the corruption surrounding Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and its union leader Carlos Romero Deschamps must be dealt with and overcome. Corruption within the petrol producer cannot be allowed to continue, said Flores.

“These reforms are, as their title suggests, structural reforms which will transform the entire structure of the oil sector in Mexico. It is not possible that this figure, who is one of the most corrupt in the country, can continue to operate at the heart of the oil union network. As oil workers, we cannot allow ourselves to sit back and watch while reforms as important as these are coming into place,” said Flores.
