18/05/2017 | US - Comey gets the call: Senate intelligence panel requests ousted FBI boss testify

Dan Boylan

Senators said Wednesday they want former FBI Director James B. Comey and his replacement, acting Director Andrew McCabe, to return and testify about the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Senate Intelligence committee chairman, Sen. Richard Burr, and ranking Democrat, Sen. Mark Warner, have requested Mr. Comey testify in both an open and closed setting.

Last week, President Trump fired Mr. Comey, calling him a “showboat” and arguing that he was not satisfied with his job performance at the nation’s leading law enforcement agency, particularly regarding his handling of last year’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails.

Mr. Trump has also said of the FBI investigation of his campaign’s alleged ties to Russia — which Mr. Comey publicly announced in March — that the allegations were phony, adding that he wasn’t trying to impede the probe. On Tuesday, a New York Times report alleged that Mr. Trump asked Mr. Comey in February to shut down an investigation of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

The White House has also noted that Mr. McCabe, in testimony before Congress last week, told lawmakers that the White House had not interfered with any investigations.

“There has been no effort to impede our investigation to date,” Mr. McCabe said.

In their invitation to Mr. McCabeMr. Burr and Mr. Warner have requested that he provide all of Mr. Comey’s notes and memos regarding any communications he may have had with senior White House and Department of Justice officials related to the Russia probe.
