13/11/2006 | INDIA - The Abduction of a High-Tech Executive's Son

Stratfor Staff

The 3-year-old son of Naresh Gupta, a senior vice president at Adobe India, was kidnapped Nov. 13 while he waited for a school bus with the family's maid in the New Delhi suburb of Noida.

The boy reportedly was outside the family home in an affluent neighborhood at about 8:15 a.m. when two young men on a black motorcycle rode up and snatched him. Indian police have questioned the maid, but she was not immediately identified as a suspect in the kidnapping. The abduction, which appears criminal in nature, will likely result in a ransom demand.

Abductions involving the children of the wealthy usually are either inside jobs carried out in collusion with a member of the household staff or are staged only after extensive pre-operational surveillance. In many of these cases, the victim's security is compromised by a member of the household staff who provides the kidnappers with sensitive information such as schedules, routines, itineraries and information on vulnerabilities in physical security. In many cases, the kidnappers are personal acquaintances of the staff member. Sometimes the kidnappers establish a personal relationship with a staff member in order to gain the person's confidence and obtain this information.

If there is no accomplice on the household staff or security detail, the kidnappers must conduct extensive pre-operational surveillance to determine the most vulnerable point in the victim's routine. During the surveillance, the kidnappers can be spotted by alert security personnel trained in countersurveillance, which can lead to their arrest and the disruption of the plot.

In this case, the abduction occurred at the point of departure, which is not surprising, because people tend to follow a regular departure pattern. It also can be assumed that a getaway vehicle was parked near the abduction point to quickly transfer the boy to a mode of transportation that would keep him better under control -- and out of sight.

The child's father, Naresh Gupta, is a fairly prominent figure in India's high-tech sector. He established Adobe's campus in Noida and integrated a second campus in Bangalore after the company acquired software company Macromedia in 2005. Adobe's Indian operation has become the company's research and development center outside of the United States. Gupta, who was born in India, divides his time between India and Adobe's headquarters in San Jose, Calif.

The kidnapping underscores the need for a proactive and comprehensive security plan, which includes vetting household staff, proper residential security and the implementation of a countersurveillance program. In a country such as India, where the disparity between rich and poor is great and affluent areas of a town are often next to or surrounded by slums, adequate security is essential. Equally important is the vetting of household staff or anyone else who has access to the children and information about their physical security. In India, with its colonial system of record-keeping still in place, conducting background investigations and checking for criminal histories is very difficult -- if not impossible.

Except for in Kashmir, where several militant groups kidnap foreigners as a way to secure the release of jailed comrades, foreigners are rarely kidnapped in India. However, kidnappings involving the children of wealthy high-tech executives also are extremely rare. Thus, even though the Noida kidnapping was directed at a high-profile Indian national, the incident could indicate a growing boldness by kidnappers in the country. In that case, kidnappings of foreign CEOs and their families could follow.

This threat can be mitigated by carefully vetting household staff when possible, implementing proper security measures, teaching staff the importance of situational awareness, posting guards for protection and training family members and staff to spot surveillance, in addition to employing a trained countersurveillance team.
