19/05/2007 | EU and U.S. Policies on Biofuels: Potential Impacts on Developing Countries

German Marshall Fund

The dramatic rise in energy prices, the geopolitical tensions in some oil producing regions and the uncertainties surrounding the future availability and access to nonrenewable resources have awakened a strong interest for biofuels in many parts of the world.

The enthusiasm for biofuels, as an alternative to fossil fuels, can be observed not only in Brazil - the world pioneer in competitive bioethanol production - but also in the United States (U.S.) and in the European Union (EU), as well as in many developing countries.

GMF analyzes the impact of EU and U.S. trade policies on biofuels production and the export potential of different groups of developing countries that have engaged in the biofuels industry. The study considers the production of first-generation biofuels based on agricultural feedstock.
