19/05/2013 | Remembering what gave rise to Argentina's mini-Nuremberg trials

Martin Edwin Andersen

As the Washington Post special correspondent who covered the 1985 "mini-Nuremberg" trials against General Jorge Videla and other senior military dirty warriors, and then went on to break the story in 1987 about Secretary of State Henry Kissinger giving the murderous and anti-semitic generals a "green light" for the so-called Rio de la Plata "dirty war. I suggest the following readings:

For an inside look at what really happened during the so-called "dirty war," including the Argentine army's use of the head of the Montonero guerrillas--Mario Firmenich--as a counter-intelligence agent, see:http://www.offnews.info/downloads/FirmenichScherrer2.pdf

For a look at the fateful end of remaining respect for human rights within the Argentine military shortly after the 1976 coup, see: http://www.elcorreo.eu.org/El-General-argentino-Arturo-A?lang=fr

And to understand the role played by conservative Republican Ambassador Robert C. Hill in unsuccessfully raising the human rights banner before the Carter presidency, see my Dossier Secreto: Argentina's Desaparecidos and the Myth of the "Dirty War," and Christopher Hitchens seminal first-person account in Vanity Fair:http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2004/1...

Finally, the fabled Robert W. Scherrer, the heroic FBI legal attaché stationed in Buenos Aires during those years, monitored the violence of the supposed dirty "war": for the U.S. embassy.

In one letter he wrote to me, he flatly stated: “A considerable portion of the murders, kidnappings and extortions attributed to the guerrillas were caused by other elements. … Terrorism in Argentina was serious and deadly but its scope was exaggerated. … [it was] a convenient vehicle for irresponsible elements of the military and their civilian counterparts to seek retaliation against real or imagined wrongs.”

Not to forgotten is the real role played by the corrupt Kirchners' "efficacious collaborator," Horacio Verbitsky, a purported clean government and human rights activist still trotted out by the Washington Post, The New York Times and other media for comment on stories that even extend beyond Argentina.

In "Pope Francis and some still dirty secrets from Argentina’s so-called dirty 'war'; When the accuser should stand among the accused" (http://www.offnews.info/verArticulo.php?contenidoID=44546) I lay out the full story about this former senior Montonero guerrilla's collaboration with high-ranking Argentine Air Force leaders during the height of the death squad murders of those who were once Verbitsky's revolutionary colleagues.

As the celebrated Argentine journalist and grossly-mistreated military junta prisioner Jacobo Timerman would later comment to me, how was it that his former employee Verbitsky, well known as a former Montonero intelligence official, was allowed to live undisturbed in Buenos Aires during the worst of the military repression?

To which I would add: How was it that Verbitsky could be mentioned, by name, in a book read by the same vicious military he opposed in armed struggle, and not be bothered?

My first book--Dossier Secreto, called a “tour de force” in a full page review in the Sunday New York Times--helps put many of these enduring myths to bed.

For as President John F. Kennedy once said:

""For the great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie--deliberate, contrived and dishonest--but the myth--persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

"Too often we hold fast to the cliches of our forebears. We subject all facts to a prefabricated set of interpretations. We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought."

I knew Carlos Menem very well, having accompanied Senator Kennedy to his La Rioja province to honor the martyred Bishop Enrique Angelleli, who the military murdered in 1976. Later Menem promised me three high-paying (and little work) jobs--one when he was still governor of La Rioja, the other two when he was already president.

I knew only later that, at least in the second offer, he wanted me to help "explain" the necessity of pardon to liberal Democrats like Senator Edward Kennedy and others in Washington, D.C. and, they suspected, in editorial board rooms in the most prestigious newspapers and magazines.

At the same time, however, Menem's key aide, Alberto Kohan, very close to the Washington intelligence establishment and well as international arms traffickers, admitted to me that Menem was also going to pardon supposed Montonero guerrilla leader Mario Firmenich.

This despite the fact that he knew that Firmenich was really an Argentine army intelligence double agent--and that in fact there was no "balance" in Menem's move because all those to be pardoned worked for the military--some in uniform, others posed in provocative workers' khaki.
