It is the second time Andersen has published with JFQ, the other being "Ethnic Politics, Defense and Security in 'Latin' America" (Issue 58, 3rd Quarter, 2010).

Andersen, who served as the Newsweek and Washington Post special correspondent in Buenos Aires from 1982-1987, has been a strong critic of the Kirchner Administrations, and particularly those military and police policies promoted by Minister Nilda Garre, a close friend of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez.

Andersen is also the author of three books--two on Argentina. 

The first, Dossier Secreto: Argentina's Desaparecidos and the Myth of the Dirty "War," published in 1993, was called a "tour de force" by The New York Times.  

The second, La Policia: Pasado, Presente y Propuestas para el Futuro, was published in 2002, in reaction to books that invariably either praised Argentine police forces without distinction, or served only to denounce them as institutional violators of human rights, without also pointing to the institutions' own heroes, and the politicized context in which they were required to act.

Finally, last year, Andersen published Peoples of the Earth; Ethnonationalism, Democracy and the Indigenous Challenge in "Latin" America.

Although much has been written on native peoples in the region, critics have said that Peoples of the Earth fills a previously virtually untouched void on the positive impact on democracy, security and the environment when the American continents' first peoples and their native cultures are treated with respect by their non-Indian co-nationals.
