The self-described party of the people isn’t very happy these days. As Democrats’ elected officials careen from epic disaster to epic disaster, Americans are voicing loud discontent. If the 2012 election were held now, it would be a Democrat disaster.

Whether it’s ObamaCare or trillion-dollar deficits or the government’s drunken spending binge, Americans say they’re eager for change.

Democrats have controlled most of the levers of federal power since 2006. Yet today polls show that more than 80% of Americans say they’re dissatisfied with government. And two-thirds of Democrats agree with that.

So if voters reject you and you think they’re wrong, what do you do? Why, get rid of democracy, of course!

Peter Orszag, formerly Obama’s budget director and now a vice chairman at Citigroup, recently penned a column in the New Republic titled: “Too Much of a Good Thing: Why We Need Less Democracy.” No joke, folks.

“To counter gridlock,” he wrote, we may need to make our political institutions “a little less democratic.”

“A little less democratic”? As in you no longer have the right to object to what the government does? Seems Hitler, Stalin and Mao tried that, but it didn’t work out.

That’s bad enough. But North Carolina’s Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue stuck her foot in it too, suggesting “we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years” so it can run up trillions more debt.

What is it with liberal Democrats? Yeah, those pesky, ungrateful voters demanding competence and results.

A dirty secret is this has always been the goal of self-proclaimed progressive Democrats, at least since Woodrow Wilson: Replace the will of the people with the will of the bureaucrats. A society run by “experts” — like the ones that run our failed “stimulus,” TARP and the Fed.

Fact is, they don’t trust you to run your own lives, and they have a barely concealed contempt for the very people who voted them into office. They want to rule you by curbing your democratic rights — by force, if needed.

Is that latter an exaggeration? Well, candidate Barack Obama in unscripted remarks in 2008 called for a “civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded (as the military.)”
