The United Arab Emirates Interior Ministry has instructed police to crack down on illegal immigrants in Ajman and other emirates, Khaleej Times reported Feb. 27, citing Interior Ministry Undersecretary Shaikh Saif Abdullah al-Shaafar. According to al-Shaafar, police from Ajman and Dubai started raiding neighborhoods in an intensive operation beginning Feb. 26 as they were “instructed to launch an inspection campaign on every inch of the UAE to clear its soil from violators.” ...

KHAR, Pakistan — Pakistani troops have defeated Taliban militants in two strongholds near the Afghan border after a grinding offensive, officers in both military operations said Saturday.

Pakistan's military showcased its gains in the area as it faces criticism for failing to dislodge militants from the nearby Swat region and amid concern that growing political turmoil in the country will undermine its resolve to tackle extremism. ...

Hit hard by the global financial crisis, Dubai issued bonds on Feb. 22 as a means to raise $10 billion in cash to meet its financial obligations, which were bought by the United Arab Emirates’ central bank. Although Dubai is attempting to avoid taking loans from the UAE’s wealthiest emirate, it cannot prevent dependency on Abu Dhabi because of that country’s control of the central bank. This is just the first step in the process of Abu Dhabi gaining influence over Dubai, and how far it goes depends on the duration of the international financial crisis. ...
