The Castro Brothers' Big Dirty Secret
For years I have been reporting on how Fidel Castro has been crushing internal dissent. I did this while simultaneously trying to demythicize his comrade, Che Guevara, a charismatic man when he was not a merciless executioner at Havana prisons. I once met Guevara, and, during our exchange at a Cuban mission in New York, we did not agree on the value of free elections. As for Fidel's brother, Raul, he continues the family tradition of adding to the prison population of Cubans caught practicing discordant political speech.

Biden strikes the right balance
Of all the analyses and cheerleading I've seen on the presidential race, a column in the April 19 Des Moines Register by Richard Doak, a former editor there, made the fundamental point: "Who will defend the Constitution? That should be the litmus test." He continued: "Most of the candidates, especially the leading Republicans, have failed to press any qualms about the claims of absolute executive power by President Bush and Vice President Cheney."

Cuban civil society
Despite Fidel Castro's prisons holding ever more dissenters in foulconditions, courageous Cubans will be in Havana on May 20 for a general meeting of the Assembly to Promote Civil Society in Cuba, a force for democracy encompassing 365 independent groups. Its members are still free in mind and spirit, and aware they too may wind up behind bars for coming.
