20/04/2005 | National Maritime Strategic Symposium to be held May 4-6

UCI

Two leading homeland security/defense consulting firms have announced a National Maritime Strategic Symposium to be held May 4-6 that will examine critical maritime domain issues through the use of realistic, threat-based scenarios, lectures and panel discussions.

Unconventional Concepts, Inc. (UCI), a Mary Esther, FL.-based defense and homeland security consulting firm, and Lion Claw Tactical (LCT), a Norfolk-based law enforcement First Responder and Tactical Responder training company, said the event will address topics that include: maritime threat awareness and training concerns; high interest vessels; ship hijacking case study; and non-compliant vessel boarding. The symposium will also examine issues relating to oil platform security and maritime domain security codes.

The interactive learning environment will be enhanced by a demonstration of tactical law enforcement maritime operations—such as tactical swimming, drown proofing, small boat operations and vessel boarding—conducted by police, military and fire/rescue personnel specially trained by LCT in the run-up to the Norfolk event.

The symposium, open to members of the press, provides “a unique opportunity for a broad cross-section of maritime security policymakers and practitioners to address common issues and concerns by confronting a variety of practical scenarios and their policy implications,” said Mike Malone, UCI director of civil-military integration and maritime operations.

Lion Claw Tactical, the training division of London Bridge Trading Company, Ltd., draws on the experience of active-service law enforcement officers with extensive backgrounds in tactical operations, crisis management, hostage negotiations, maritime operations, threat assessment, surveillance and counter-surveillance, chemical/biological awareness, and executive protection. Since 2002, LCT training has included participants from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center; the FBI-Joint Terrorism Task Force; the Federal Air Marshal Service; the United States Marine Corps and the U.S. Coast Guard. All LCT law enforcement instructors are certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as General Instructors, Firearms and Defensive Tactics Instructors.

Unconventional Concepts, Inc., is the manager (Norfolk office) of the Maritime Domain Critical Infrastructure Protection (MD-CIP) project, tasked with reviewing maritime protection technology and developing a vulnerability assessment matrix and force protection doctrine for strategic Department of Defense ports in the United States for the U.S. Northern Command.
