Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies - Staff

Introduction - The Security and Defense Education in the Americas conference will analyze the major issues concerning security and defense education within the hemisphere. The conference will analyze and compare the various national education systems, educational institutions, curricula and teaching methodology, and the knowledge and skills that students develop. There will be a series of presentations and discussions by leading experts in security and defense education, Ministry of Defense leaders, and directors from the hemisphere's leading educational institutions. The conference will serve as a platform to present conclusions from a year-long analysis of the relevance of security and defense education in each nation within the hemisphere.

Participants will

  • Discuss in depth the inner workings of security and defense education with analysts and leaders throughout the hemisphere.
  • Discuss the current state of security and defense education and the best means by which to improve and adapt it to current security environments.
  • Who Will Attend:
    The conference will be led by a number of international analysts and directors of educational institutions and ministerial posts. University presidents, academic deans, department heads, and instructors of civil and military educational centers throughout the hemisphere are invited to participate. An official invitation is available through the registration form.

    Methodology:
    The conference is formatted to produce analysis and debate through lectures, presentations, and panel discussions. Consistent with all activities within National Defense University, the principle of non-attribution will prevail.

    Essential Information:
    The conference will take place at the Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies located in the Lincoln Hall of National Defense University in Washington DC. The conference will begin at 8:30 am on Monday, September 12th and conclude at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 14th. Registration for the event will open at 7:00 am on Monday, September 12th.

    Accommodations:
    The speakers will be staying at the Key Bridge Marriott Hotel in Rosslyn, Virginia. Other participants may make reservations at the same on a space-available basis. All accommodation expenses will be the participant's responsibility. CHDS will provide transportation between the hotel and the conference venue.

    Cost:
    As the event has been sponsored by The Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies and the Inter-American Defense College, there is no registration fee for participants. Participants will be responsible for travel costs, accommodation and meals. Coffee/tea and refreshments will be provided throughout the conference.

    Registration
    The demand for this conference could exceed capacity. Registrations will be considered until Friday, September 9th and acceptance will depend on availability of space.
