Representatives from 43 agencies have begun staffing a hub designed to ensure information flows smoothly should violence occur during the NATO summit in Chicago.
Officials opened the Multi-Agency Communications Center
on Thursday for reporters, but asked them not to reveal its exact location in
suburban Chicago for security reasons.
Authorities will monitor around 10 large TV screens. They
can hook into live shots of protesters from one of hundreds of street-side
security cameras. One TV was tuned to a baseball game Thursday.
The center will forward information to command centers,
which would make operational decisions, including where to deploy police.
Secret Service spokesman George Ogilvie says the summit's
just one of three events this year designated as a high-priority "national
security event." The others are the Republican and Democratic conventions.
