More Latin American countries will recognize a Palestinian state on the lands that Israel occupied in 1967, the Palestinian foreign minister said Sunday.
Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay have recently declared that they recognize a Palestinian state within the pre-1967 war borders. Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru "are putting the final touches to declare their recognition of the Palestinian state in coordination with the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)," Riyadh Al-Maliki said.
Al-Maliki said the PNA is carrying out diplomatic efforts to secure more recognition from more countries in Africa and Asia. " These steps are in preparation to go to the UN Security Council" to ask for an international recognition of the future Palestinian state, he added.
The Palestinian leadership would go to the UN Security Council "when the time is appropriate," Al-Maliki said.
Israel and the United States oppose any Palestinian effort to gain recognition outside the frame of peace negotiations. The peace talks failed in September, when Israel resumed building settlements in the West Bank.
Al-Maliki said that the Arab states are planning to get a resolution from the UN Security Council condemning the Jewish settlement.
