Ecuador's National Electoral Council (CNE) on Tuesday said that a small majority of voters have rejected several key reforms proposed by President Rafael Correa's in Saturday's referendum on judicial reform and stricter control of the press.

With 47.6 percent of all the votes counted, the CNE said that between 43 and 48 percent of the voters cast "yes" in the referendum to support Correa's reform proposals, while 40 percent and 44 percent voted "no".

But on Correa's proposal to set up a temporary judicial council to restructure Ecuador's justice system, 44.55 percent of voters said "no" and 44.28 percent voted "yes", the council said.

On Correa's proposal to create a special council to regulate the contents of the Ecuadorian press, 43.92 percent voted against it while 43.22 percent voted for, the council said.

Correa's political opposition has run an intense campaign to reject the president's reform proposals, saying it threatens to undermine Ecuador's judicial system and will extend virtually absolute power to Correa.

Opposition lawmakers have called on international election observers to monitor the remaining vote counting process closely.

Exit polls released at the end of voting on Saturday gave the "yes" side up to as much as 62 percent of the vote, a result which Correa immediately after the release declared as a "historic victory" for his government.

Ecuador Saturday held a referendum on some ten reform proposals raised by Correa.
