08/06/2011 | Syria - Residents of Jisr al-Shughour contradict official story

Telegraph Staff

Video has been posted online purportedly showing testimony from residents of the Syrian town of Jisr al-Shughour who contradict the government's description of a massacre of over 100 security personnel.

The Syrian government say security forces were sent to the town to defend residents from armed gangs who were burning government buildings and terrorising the citizens.

State television said at least 20 security force members were killed in an ambush by "armed gangs", and 82 were killed in an attack on a security post.

In the video posted online a woman who claims to be a resident of Jisr al-Shughour says she fled when security forces attacked a funeral for people killed in previous clashes.

The woman goes on to claim: “...they started firing at us from the post office building. And there was a helicopter flying above us and they hit us with the tanks and they fired at us and they put the Army in front of us. We don't want the Army to come to us. They killed our youths. Four of my cousins were killed. And my two sons are injured.”

Sawasiah, a Syrian human rights organisation said that of the 120 people reported killed at the weekend most were civilians while some were security personnel who refused to fire on the mourners.
