Bogota’s suspended mayor has been charged with seeking payoffs in exchange for awarding major construction contracts in the Colombian capital.
Samuel Moreno was charged Monday with crimes including embezzlement and extortion in the awarding of public contracts. If convicted, the 51-year-old could be sentenced to at least six years in prison.
Prosecutors say several contractors won major projects after backing Moreno’s 2007 mayoral bid and the congressional campaign of Moreno’s brother Ivan.
Three jailed businessmen say they made payoffs to Ivan Moreno in exchange for projects including a still-unfinished highway linking Bogota’s airport with its downtown.
Samuel and Ivan Moreno say they are innocent.
