21/12/2006 | 'The fabulous Baker Boy': Coup de grace for the Iraq Surrender Group

CSP

Even by fickle official Washington's standards, the half-life of the Iraq Study Group's report seems to have been remarkably short.

Perhaps that was because the congressionally mandated commission's 79 recommendations were so transparently wrong-headed and counterproductive that even politicians scurrying for cover on Iraq found the proferred fig-leaf too insubstantial to embrace. Alternatively, perhaps it was because of the extraordinary arrogance of James Baker, the driving force behind the ISG, who essentially demanded that President Bush adopt in their entirety the group's declarations and guidance - giving offense to constitutionalists and others on both sides of the aisle.

Whatever is left of the former Secretary of State's vaunted reputation for acumen in matters of statecraft and international affairs, however, is likely to be further shredded by a hilarious new short video entitled "The Fabulous Baker Boy." The nearly two-and-a-half minute film, which was released today on YouTube, was co-written by Hollywood's David Zucker and Myrna Sokoloff and directed by Mr. Zucker.

The video begins with a satirical treatment of another man once lionized for his statesmanship, former British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain. It ridicules the preposterous idea that a genocidal megalomaniac like Adolf Hitler could be appeased, then moves forward to an actor impersonating Jim Baker repeating this mistake with Hitler's admirer and would-be successor in our own time: Iranian President Majmoud Ahmadinejad.

The video offers a devastating portrayal of Baker negotiating with Ahmadinejad and his puppet, Bashir Assad - signing assorted pieces of paper, then brandishing them a la Chamberlain for the cameras, even as the Axis of Evil types outmaneuver him in three-card monte, a shell-game, then by literally stealing his wallet. In the process, Baker agrees to allow American interests, lives and Israel to be sacrificed.

David Zucker is the hugely successful director/producer/writer of numerous hit films including "Airplane!," the "Naked Gun" series and "Scary Movie 3" and "Scary Movie 4." In recent years, he has turned his gift for comedic writing and satire into formidable political weapons. In 2004, Mr. Zucker teamed up with veteran television hand Myrna Sokoloff to produce "Flip-Flop," a devastating video for the Club for Growth concerning then-Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's indecisiveness.

Then, in the Fall of 2006, Mr. Zucker joined forces with Ms. Sokoloff again, producing two videos mocking the attitudes of many of today's senior Democrats concerning tax policy and international security: the highly acclaimed "Taxman" and "Basketball Diplomacy." In the latter, a character bearing a striking resemblance to another former Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, is shown in absurdly submissive roles vis ? vis the world's tyrants and terrorists, a pattern of behavior all too familiar to students of the latter's time in office.

Of his most recent video, Mr. Zucker said, "Bringing in Iran and Syria to solve the problems of the Iraq insurgency and the murders of Lebanese leaders is like asking O.J. Simpson's help in finding the real killers of his wife and Ron Goldman."

The Center for Security Policy appreciates this latest, humorous take on James Baker and his Iraq Surrender Group. It is very much to be hoped that this film will help the American people to get the last laugh about the defeatism the Baker commission evokes - and that it will serve as a deterrent to any others tempted to argue that we can safely, constructively and responsibly negotiate with our Islamofascist enemies and their enablers bent on our destruction.
