02/09/2007 | Atfa Supporters Deliver 8,000+ Letters To World Bank, Idb Officials Calling For A 'No' Vote On $10b Upcoming Argentine Loan Request; Bondholders To Donor Nations: It's Time To Say 'No'

PR Newswire Staff

Today, the American Task Force Argentina (ATFA) announced that more than 8,000 letters have been sent to senior leadership at the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) requesting that the lending institutions reject an anticipated $10 billion Argentine loan request until the Government of Argentina honors its obligations to international bondholders.

In just five days, ATFA members and other supporters around the world have transmitted thousands of letters, urging World Bank and IDB leadership to consider Argentina's unprecedented 2005 restructuring and repudiation of more than $20 billion in bonds when making loan decisions:

" ... We urge you to use your voice and vote 'No' to deny access to loans to Argentina until this matter is resolved ... This position is in the interests of the people of Argentina, donor nations to multilateral lenders, and private lenders harmed by the actions by the Government of Argentina ... "   The full text of the letter, which is open for anyone to participate, can be found on

ATFA's website at: http://ga3.org/campaign/atfa_vote_no .   The letter campaign follows an August 16 letter to U.S. Secretaries Rice and Paulson from ATFA Co-chairs Dr. Robert Shapiro and Ambassador Nancy Soderberg in which they formally asked that the Departments of State and Treasury use their voting power at various multilateral lending bodies to intensify efforts to persuade Argentina to repay American creditors.

ATFA, through a variety of events and research initiatives, works to encourage the United States government and other Argentine debt stakeholders to take action on behalf of American taxpayers, businesses and bondholders.

ATFA's website, http://www.atfa.org/ , serves as a clearinghouse for news and information related to Argentina's restructuring and the ATFA's efforts.

Made up of major creditor groups, the ATFA is co-chaired by The Honorable Robert J. Shapiro, former Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs in the Clinton Administration, and Ambassador Nancy Soderberg, Ambassador at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York from 1997 to 2001.
